RE: Tamils Need the ICC, not a Sri Lankan Kangaroo Court; Tamils want a Referendum, not the 13th Amendment

Your Excellency,

We, the undersigned, are the Tamil mothers of missing Tamil children. We have been gathered and demonstrating in the streets of Vavuniya for the last 2018 days, continuing our long struggle to find our missing children.

We shall persevere in this struggle until our missing children are found. In this fight, we continue to hope for a political solution that will protect the Tamils in a secure and sovereign Tamil homeland, safe from future genocidal killings of the Tamils by the Sinhalese regime of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has long been an oppressive nation and is increasingly a failed state, with its corrupt political system and dysfunctional economy, something that has been made painfully clear to the world for the past several months. The overwhelming majority of Tamils on the island want an independent Tamil nation. The best way to bring this about is through a UN-monitored referendum.

Some of our missing children have been forcibly converted to Buddhism. We know that others have been smuggled and sold to foreign countries as labors, some as sex slaves.

Mr. Robert Blake, former US ambassador to Sri Lanka, recognized that the Sri Lankan government was involved in extra-legal abductions and killings. These abductors have been employed by state at its highest levels. Asking Sri Lankan war criminals to enact justice against themselves for the killing of Tamils and countless other human rights violations is absurd; it has never happened in the history of this civilized world.

Only the ICC can find justice for us.

We Tamils continue to suffer in our homeland.

The Sri Lankan army enlists unemployed, starving Tamils who have joined just to survive. They are victims of the war: orphans, former rebels, even widows. They are then forced to do the following:

1. Spy on their fellow Tamils and terrorize them in their day-to-day life.
2. Smuggle drugs into the Tamil homeland from India.
3. Burglarize Tamils and their homes in the night.
4. Serve in gangs armed with swords, terrorizing the population.

The Sri Lankan army is still abducting and killing Tamils and raping Tamil women. They seize Tamil farms and homes as part of their plan to economically cripple us and “ethnically cleanse” our homeland.

Tamils do not even have an economy; it has been stolen or strangled by the Sri Lankan army.

The Sri Lankan army and Sri Lankan Buddhist Archaeological Department have invaded sacred Hindu sites, desecrating and destroying temples and putting their own Buddhist religious symbols in their place. After building Buddhist temples, they bring Sinhalese settlers into those communities and force the Tamils to leave their own villages.

Tamils are terrorized and bullied every time the Sri Lankan Land Department surveys the land and the Archeological Department does a dig the area in a Hindu temple location. Not just our religion, but our very culture is threatened.

To end these abuses and injustices, we Tamils need our sovereignty to be restored. To do this, a UN-sponsored referendum is desperately needed.

There were 20,000 Tamils killed in 2009, according to a United Nations report. Then the UN changed to the number to 70,000 Tamils killed. The Archbishop of Manna, Rev. Joseph Rajappu, informed the Sri Lanka’s Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, that a much more accurate total was that 145,000 Tamils were massacred by the Sri Lankan army and 25,000 Tamils left missing. There were an estimated 90,000 widows and 50,000 orphans at the end of war.

We need international justice overseen by the ICC, not by Sri Lankan Kangaroo courts.

We are not interested in the 13th Amendment or the sham that is Sri Lankan constitution; we want a referendum that supports direct democracy in order to properly reveal the will and future path of the Tamil people.

Please use your good office to achieve justice for all the Tamil victims and the mothers of missing children. Let us find a lasting resolution and make history.
