Condemnation of Provocative Actions and Unauthorized Placement of Buddha Statues in Kantharodai, Chunnakam

History has repeatedly shown that aggression can be resisted and ultimately defeated when a people stand firm in defence of their homeland, identity, and rights—a resolve vividly demonstrated by Ukraine’s fierce resistance and endurance against imperial aggression.

CHUNNAKAM, JAFFNA — November 2, 2026 — Community organizations, the US Tamil Diaspora, cultural preservation advocates, and civil society representatives strongly condemn the recent unauthorized and provocative actions surrounding the placement of a Buddha statue at the historical archaeological site of Kantharodai in Chunnakam under the guise of permitted departmental rituals.

According to reports published on October 31, 2026, permission was sought from the Department of Archaeology ostensibly for standard religious observances (பூசை வழிபாடு) at Kantharodai. Instead, this permission was exploited to install a Buddha statue on-site for worship, with subsequent plans to transport the statue to the Naga Vihara in Ariyakulam for large-scale ceremonies. These unilateral actions represent a clear breach of trust and a deliberate distortion of heritage management protocols.

Historic Tamil Buddhist Heritage vs. State-Sponsored Sinhala-Buddhist Hegemony

Kantharodai is a globally recognized ancient archaeological site holding profound historical significance for the Tamil-speaking population of Jaffna. Centuries before the emergence of modern Sinhala-Buddhist nationalist ideologies and the institutional interventions of the contemporary Maha Sangha, Kantharodai flourished as an ancient Tamil Buddhist center, documented through ancient Brahmi inscriptions and early historic artifacts deeply rooted in the indigenous heritage of the region.

The ongoing attempts by external state bodies and religious authorities to impose Sinhala-Buddhist symbols and clergy control over ancient Tamil archaeological sites like Kantharodai have no historical legitimacy. The historical presence of Buddhism in ancient Jaffna was an indigenous and regional development distinct from contemporary political agendas. Utilizing state apparatuses—such as the Department of Archaeology—to alter the religious and cultural demographics of historical Tamil soil is an aggressive infringement on local autonomy and heritage rights.

Warning of Tensions, Rejection of Communal Provocation, and the Resilience of Self-Determination

Such unilateral and intrusive actions directly echo the systemic injustices and cultural aggressions that culminated in the tragic anti-Tamil pogroms of July 1983. Forcing religious symbols associated with dominant state ideologies onto historical Tamil sites without the consent of the local community and the global Tamil diaspora inflicts severe psychological trauma and stokes avoidable communal tensions.

Furthermore, history has repeatedly proven that any war or aggression can be resisted and ultimately defeated when a people stand resilient in defense of their homeland, identity, and rights—a reality vividly demonstrated by the fierce defense and endurance of Ukraine against overwhelming imperial encroachment.

We firmly declare:

▪ No Legitimacy: Neither the modern Sinhala political establishment nor external religious institutions have any historical, cultural, or administrative justification to assert ownership over or alter the sacred heritage sites of Chunnakam and Kantharodai.
▪ Immediate Cessation: We demand an immediate halt to all unauthorized religious installations, state-backed incursions, and partisan activities at ancient heritage sites across the Northern Province.
▪ Respect for Local Heritage: The preservation of ancient sites like Kantharodai must respect local historical truths, honor indigenous Tamil Buddhist heritage without political co-optation, and involve transparent community oversight.

We call upon international human rights organizations, cultural heritage watchdogs, and diplomatic missions to monitor these aggressive demographic and cultural encroachments, and to stand with the people of Jaffna and the global Tamil diaspora—including the US Tamil community—in protecting their historical memory and peace.

Thank you,
