Tamil Diaspora Calls on Trump to Apply the Venezuela Doctrine to Sri Lanka and Restore Tamil Sovereignty
The Tamil Diaspora notes President Donald Trump’s recent statement that the United States is prepared to temporarily administer Venezuela following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, citing mass criminality, state failure, and threats to regional stability.
The Tamil Diaspora asserts that Sri Lanka presents a parallel—and longer-running—case of state failure, particularly with respect to the Tamil nation in the island’s North and East.
For more than seven decades, successive Sri Lankan governments have:
- Denied Tamils their right to self-determination
- Militarized civilian Tamil regions
- Confiscated land through the army, archaeology, and religious encroachment
- Overseen mass atrocities, including the 2009 genocide
- Blocked every meaningful international accountability mechanism
Unlike Venezuela, Sri Lanka’s crimes have been rewarded with impunity.
If the United States can justify temporary international control in Venezuela to restore order, uphold law, and protect civilians, then the same moral and legal logic applies to Sri Lanka, where Tamils continue to live under military occupation in their own homeland.
The Tamil Diaspora does not call for war.
We call for:
- International trusteeship or supervision in the Tamil homeland
- Demilitarization of the North and East
- Internationally supervised governance
- A UN-backed referendum on Tamil self-determination
- Restoration—not creation—of Tamil sovereignty, consistent with international precedents
History is clear:
Bangladesh. East Timor. Kosovo. South Sudan. Namibia.
Sovereignty was restored only after international intervention and supervision—not after endless talks with occupying states.
Sri Lanka has demonstrated that it is unwilling and incapable of governing Tamils justly. Continuing to treat Sri Lanka as a normal democracy while it practices land seizure, cultural erasure, and military rule is a moral failure of the international system.
President Trump has stated that the world must not tolerate criminal regimes that abuse their own people. The Tamil Diaspora urges him to extend that principle to Sri Lanka, where genocide was committed, accountability was denied, and occupation continues.
If the United States can “run” Venezuela temporarily to restore order and justice, then it must support international action in Sri Lanka to:
- End military occupation
- Protect the Tamil people
- And allow Tamils to freely decide their political future
Justice delayed for Tamils is justice denied.
The world must stop protecting Sri Lanka’s impunity.
Tamil sovereignty must be restored.
Thank you,
