Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Role in Tamil Genocide: From Burning the Jaffna Library to Shielding War Criminals
New York, NY – Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s long history of anti-Tamil violence, complicity in genocide, and shielding war criminals is once again under scrutiny following his recent interview on Al Jazeera English’s Head to Head. His denials and evasions reaffirm his role in covering up Sri Lanka’s genocide against Tamils—a crime for which he must be held accountable.
1983 Pogrom and Burning of the Jaffna Public Library
The 1983 Black July anti-Tamil pogrom, where thousands of Tamils were massacred by Sinhalese mobs, was one of Sri Lanka’s darkest moments. Current Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake accused Ranil Wickremesinghe, along with members of the United National Party (UNP), of playing a role in organizing and fueling the riots, as well as the infamous burning of the Jaffna Public Library in 1981.
The burning of the Jaffna Public Library, which housed nearly 100,000 rare Tamil manuscripts and historical records, was a deliberate act of cultural genocide aimed at erasing Tamil history. This state-sponsored destruction, carried out by Sinhalese forces backed by the Sri Lankan government, marked the beginning of decades of systematic oppression against Tamils.
2009 Tamil Genocide: Wickremesinghe’s Shielding of War Criminals
During the final phase of Sri Lanka’s war in 2009, tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were massacred, hospitals were bombed, and humanitarian aid was deliberately blocked. Yet, Wickremesinghe has protected those responsible rather than holding them accountable:
- Blocking International Investigations: He actively prevented independent war crimes investigations into the genocide.
- Defending War Criminals: He reappointed General Shavendra Silva, who led the mass execution of Tamil civilians, despite the U.S. sanctioning Silva for war crimes.
- Allowing Gotabaya Rajapaksa to Escape Justice: After Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled in 2022, Wickremesinghe ensured his safe return without arrest, despite his role in war crimes.
Admitting to War Crimes: Blocking Humanitarian Aid to Tamils
In his Head to Head interview, Wickremesinghe admitted that Sri Lankan forces blocked humanitarian aid to Tamil civilians during the final stages of the war. This is a war crime under international law, as it directly led to the starvation and deaths of thousands of Tamils. His admission confirms what Tamils and human rights organizations have long known: Sri Lanka’s leaders, including Wickremesinghe, orchestrated a deliberate genocide.
Tamil Struggle for Justice: The Demand for International Action
The Tamil people have suffered decades of genocide, cultural erasure, and systematic violence at the hands of Sri Lankan leaders like Ranil Wickremesinghe. Now, the world must act. We demand:
