We, the U.S. Tamil Diaspora, deeply mourn the passing of Marie Howe, a remarkable leader and advocate for justice and equality. As a Massachusetts State Representative, Marie Howe played an instrumental role in shaping the 1979 Massachusetts Resolution that recognized the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka. This historic proclamation, issued by Governor Edward J. King, acknowledged the oppression of Tamils in Sri Lanka and declared May 22, 1979, as Eelam Tamils Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Marie Howe’s advocacy was pivotal in this effort. The resolution highlighted the struggles of the Tamil people, including their disenfranchisement and systemic marginalization after Sri Lanka’s independence. Her tireless efforts also fostered a meaningful connection between the cities of Boston and Trincomalee, symbolizing solidarity and hope for Tamils worldwide.
Her leadership and compassion extended far beyond the halls of legislation. She was a beacon of hope for the Tamil community, a voice for the voiceless, and a champion of human rights. Her work continues to inspire generations who strive for justice and equality.
Marie Howe’s legacy as a trailblazer for the Tamil cause will forever be remembered. May her soul rest in peace, and may her memory serve as a guiding light for those who continue her fight for justice.
