Time to Remove Sumanthiran from ITAK for the Unity and Future of Tamil Politics

“During the Tamil Eelam struggle, Prabhakaran united even his opponents to form the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), creating a cohesive and inclusive front for Tamil politics. In contrast, Sumanthiran’s recent move to expel ITAK members who contested against party candidates reflects his authoritarian approach and unwillingness to foster unity or represent the collective goals of the Tamil people.” – Tamil Diaspora

The time has come for the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) to take a decisive step for the betterment of Tamil unity and politics. Removing M.A. Sumanthiran from ITAK is not just an organizational necessity but a move in the best interest of Tamils everywhere.

Sumanthiran has been a divisive force among Tamils. His actions have fragmented not only the Tamil community but also the Tamil diaspora, Tamil Christian schools, ITAK, and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). The evidence of his divisive agenda is clear and longstanding. He has been consistently rejected by the Tamil people, who are tired of Colombo-based Tamil politicians prioritizing their personal power and wealth over the aspirations of the Tamil nation.

A Legacy of Colombo-Based Politics

Colombo-based Tamil politicians, including Sumanthiran, have historically undermined the Tamil struggle. Since 1948, these individuals have ensured that Tamils lack the power to rule themselves. Their fear of a self-ruled Northeast, independent from Colombo’s influence, stems from their concern about losing relevance and control. These politicians focus on consolidating their own power and wealth, often at the expense of the Tamil people’s freedom and self-determination.
When Prabhakaran led the Tamil Eelam struggle, he brought together everyone who had worked against him to form the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), creating a unified front for Tamil politics. That inclusive vision should serve as the benchmark for Tamil politicians and leaders. In stark contrast, Sumanthiran has pursued policies and actions that align with what Colombo’s government desires, fostering disunity instead of unity. His approach serves Colombo’s interests, not those of the Tamil people.

Sumanthiran’s Divisive Agenda

Sumanthiran’s recent announcement of expelling ITAK members who contested against party candidates is yet another example of his authoritarian approach. Instead of fostering unity, he has used his position to alienate those who seek a democratic and representative Tamil leadership. His actions further reveal his unwillingness to work towards the collective goals of the Tamil people.

The Path Forward

At this critical juncture, the Tamil community cannot afford further division. The Tamil people face increasing threats to their identity, culture, and sovereignty from the Sinhala-Buddhist nationalist agenda. It is imperative to bring the Tamil community together and strengthen our political resolve to secure our rights.
Sumanthiran, with his track record of disunity and divisiveness, must step aside for the greater good. ITAK should pass a resolution to permanently remove Sumanthiran from Tamil politics and work to rebuild unity among Tamils across the Northeast and beyond.

The Tamil people have spoken: they no longer want leaders like Sumanthiran to dictate their future. The time for decisive action is now. Together, we can ensure a stronger, united front for the Tamil struggle.
