Thamilarasu’s (ITAK) Support for Sajith Premadasa in the 2024 Presidential Election: A Betrayal of Principles

With the 2024 Presidential Election in Sri Lanka nearing, Thamilarasu’s unexpected backing of Sajith Premadasa has sparked a lot of questions. This decision has surprised many, particularly those who thought Thamilarasu was dedicated to finding a real political solution for the Tamil people.

Let’s be clear: Sajith Premadasa’s support is not based on a promise of a political solution for the Tamils. On the contrary, it is driven by external influences and, most disturbingly, financial incentives.

Many people believe that JR’s family, including Ranil Wickremesinghe, has consistently supported pro-US policies. India, worried about having a pro-US president in Sri Lanka, wanted assurances from Sajith Premadasa about his views on US policies. Once India learned that Sajith Premadasa does not back US interests, it became clear that they viewed him as a more favorable choice for the presidency.

The recent visit by a key Indian diplomat to Sri Lanka, where he met with Sajith Premadasa and Thamilarasu representatives, added another layer to the ongoing political maneuvering. The visit sparked speculation, especially as there are suspicions that large amounts of money changed hands. This financial support seems to have convinced Thamilarasu to back Sajith Premadasa, even though there was no genuine dedication to advancing the Tamil cause.

Thamilarasu’s choice to support Sajith Premadasa does not align with the organization’s values or the hopes of the Tamil people. It’s primarily driven by financial motives. This undermines the longstanding fight of Tamils for self-determination and justice.

The Tamil people need leaders who respect their values, not those who can be tempted by money. It’s disappointing to see some in Thamilarasu prioritizing personal interests over the well-being of the Tamil community. The Tamil people fought hard for their right to self-determination, and now they see their supposed leaders compromising their cause for promises of wealth and influence.

Tamils need to recognize this betrayal and hold their representatives accountable. The struggle for justice and self-determination is not something that can be traded; it requires consistent commitment and honesty.

Thamilarasu’s backing of Sajith Premadasa highlights that not everyone who claims to support the Tamil people can be relied upon. We need to stay alert and confirm that our leaders genuinely care about Tamil sovereignty and justice, rather than just their own interests.
