IS PROFESSOR RAJ SOMADEVA AN ARCHAEOLOGIST OR A MAGICIAN?
From Mannar to Chemmani: Are Archaeological Theories Being Used to Obscure Justice for Tamil Victims?
NEW YORK, October 22, 2026 — Tamil Diaspora News strongly questions the controversial interpretations associated with Sri Lankan archaeologist Professor Raj Somadeva concerning mass graves in the Tamil homeland, particularly Mannar and Chemmani.
Is Professor Somadeva practicing archaeology, or performing archaeological magic?
At Chemmani, the possibility of infectious disease or natural catastrophe has been introduced to explain suspicious mass burials. Yet no conclusive forensic evidence establishing such a cause of death has been publicly presented, nor has a specific historical epidemic or natural catastrophe been identified that accounts for these remains.
Science requires evidence. Magic requires an audience willing to believe.
Mannar and Chemmani: A Disturbing Pattern of Unanswered Questions
At Mannar, radiocarbon dating suggested that tested human remains belonged to an earlier historical period, potentially overlapping with Portuguese colonial rule. However, dating remains does not establish who the victims were, how they died, or who was responsible. Somadeva himself reportedly questioned aspects of the dating results.
At Chemmani, an infectious-disease hypothesis now risks shifting public attention away from longstanding allegations of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
Why do speculative explanations that could distance mass graves from allegations of modern state violence receive such prominence?
If hundreds of people died from an epidemic or natural catastrophe, where are the historical records, medical findings, or other scientific evidence supporting that explanation?
Archaeology Must Not Become a Shield for Political Power
Sri Lanka’s history of discrimination, enforced disappearances, and unresolved allegations of crimes against Tamils makes independent forensic investigations essential.
Tamil Diaspora News questions whether the country’s archaeological investigations are adequately protected from political influence, including pressure from Sinhala nationalist interests.
We do not allege that Professor Somadeva has been proven to work for political elites. Nevertheless, his interpretations must be independently scrutinized whenever they risk minimizing credible allegations of serious human rights violations.
An archaeologist’s responsibility is to uncover the truth, not to offer convenient explanations that could protect powerful institutions from accountability.
Tamil Sovereignty Is the Ultimate Guarantee of Protection
The controversies surrounding Mannar and Chemmani expose a deeper political problem: Tamil families continue to seek justice from institutions they have repeatedly struggled to trust.
Tamil Diaspora News calls upon the United Nations, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other democratic nations to demand independent international forensic investigations and the full disclosure of scientific evidence.
We also reaffirm the Tamil people’s right to self-determination, including an internationally supervised referendum on independence.
The Tamil people cannot entrust their future indefinitely to institutions that have failed to provide credible answers about their missing loved ones.
Mannar deserves the truth. Chemmani deserves justice. Tamil sovereignty must be restored.
