At the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Sri Lanka once again rejected calls for international accountability for atrocities against Tamils. Instead, the government promoted domestic mechanisms such as repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and creating a Truth and Reconciliation Commission — measures widely dismissed as inadequate and lacking independence.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have urged the Council to extend and strengthen the Sri Lanka Accountability Project, warning that without international oversight, mass atrocities, enforced disappearances, and mass graves will remain unaddressed. The recent excavation of the Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna, where the remains of Tamil civilians including children were uncovered, underscores the urgent need for independent international forensic investigations.
Tamil diaspora organizations call on the UNHRC to recognize the Tamil struggle as an unfinished decolonisation issue and to support a UN-monitored referendum on self-determination. UN High Commissioner Volker Türk has recommended that Sri Lanka ratify the Rome Statute of the ICC, release Tamil detainees, and permit credible investigations with international participation.
The Tamil Diaspora, USA, urges the international community to act decisively. Domestic mechanisms have failed for decades. Only international accountability will deliver truth, justice, and lasting peace for Tamils.
